I made a lot of handmade items for Christmas this year. How did I find the time? Most years keeping up with motherhood and the extra goings on during the holidays would have left me drained for the time and energy to make gifts. This year was an unusual year in our house though. My husband was out of work due to layoffs. With him home to keep everything moving along, I got to spend more time with my crochet hook and sewing machine in that month of gift creation than I usually spend in a year.
By the end of the holiday season, I had gifted 62 handmade items. Admittedly, two items were for myself so my family has matching jogger pants and a set of crocheted coffee cozies. My son was a bit exasperated when he realized I had made my own gifts. I hope someday he'll learn to love sewing or crafting as much as I do and realize the joy in using your skills to make something special.
Most everyone loves coffee and tea, right? So about half of those gifts were coffee cozies. I've made fabric cozies in the past but I decided to give crocheted cozies a try. Upon opening her gift, one friend of mine received it with such a huge smile. After talking about how I had made the cozy, she said "You should sell these!". This was really inspiring coming from a woman who has created two successful businesses based on her own creative talents.
When at our favorite local coffee shop, I’ve contemplated whipping up a dozen cozies and seeing if they would allow me to put them up for sale..
Should I start a business?
I’ve had a business name in mind for quite a long time. Hufflelark…."Huffle" for the house of wizarding creatives and "Lark" for the Western Meadow Larks whose songs I dreamily listened to growing up in Montana. Yesterday I grabbed the URL, Facebook page, a gmail account and started a Pinterest page. Suddenly I have an online presence.
Today I blog and dream. What will tomorrow bring?
